How We Justify Overeating

We all use excuses to overeat.? Whether we need it or not, we seem to have to justify it in some way.? If you want the cream cake, just have it and don't try to justify it......but remember, all the excuses in the world will not prevent the said item adding a pound or two to your weight!

Here are a few excuses we use to eat what isn't good for our weight loss and how you can try to overcome them.

I'm fed up - depressed

Junk food causes a sugar level spike initially making you feel better and happier but it quickly drops so you feel twice as low.? I've used this excuse many times but then when I've eaten it I just feel guilty and twice as depressed! Go For a walk instead.

I've not had anything to eat all day

Pound to a penny that's your excuse for eating the biggest cream cake in the shop. Again you get a quick sugar fix? but zero nutrition.? Your body? will store the fat content because you've starved yourself. ? Hunger pangs? are very distracting... and demanding.? If I'm hungry all my good intentions go out of the window and nothing will prevent me from grabbing the first unhealthy food item I can get my hands on.

Therefore, I avoid being hungry at all costs!? So the best advice I can give is don't go hungry in the first place.? Have a big bowl of wholemeal porridge with fruit in it before you leave the house. Rushing around all day is no excuse.? Keep easy to eat fruit like an apple or banana in your bag if you know you are going to be busy and won't have time for lunch. Eating little and often throughout day will keep you away from the cake shop.

I can't bear to waste anything

I completely agree but that's no reason to overeat. Can you save it for later or even the next day?? Use portion control when cooking meals.? One serving of pasta should be no more than the size of a tennis ball and a baked potato about the size of a computer mouse.

A few more novel ways of judging how big food portions should be:

‧? fish (3 oz.) = a checkbook
‧? rice (? c.) = an ice cream scoop
‧? cheese (1 oz.) = a ping-pong ball
‧? butter (1 tsp.) = a Scrabble tile
‧? hamburger (3 oz.) = a mayo jar lid
‧? peanut butter (1 tsp.) = one die
‧? poultry (3 oz.) = a deck of playing cards
‧? beef (3 oz.) = a bar of soap
‧? fruit (1 c.) = a tennis ball

Its free

That's just greedy.? If it is good for you, can you take it with you for later?? If not then you should give it a miss.

Healthy food is expensive

Junk food is much cheaper than some healthier foods, I agree.? Junk food is cheaper to produce because it is full of sugar, salt and preservatives to make it last longer.? However the best 'quality' ready meals (if such a word can be used when referring to processed food) are actually more expensive than cooking them yourselves.

Organic food is more expensive because there are no pesticides used, is more labour intensive and crops smaller but it doesn't half taste better. Buying healthier food in the long run WILL be cheaper if you plan meals and cut down on waste.? I tried this and cut our weekly food bill in half.? Finally if you eat healthier food, you're less likely to be off sick from work with coughs and colds.

Diets don't work for me

They don't work for me either.? I don't like to follow diets.? It? makes me obsessed with food.? Healthy eating does work but only if you follow it.? It's your choice.

I'm on holiday

That's fine if you're happy to put your weight back on and start over but what's the point of that.? Also lots of us cut back because we want to look better on holiday anyway.? If you have started your healthy eating months before your trip, you won't want to eat rubbish anyway.

I have a slow metabolism

I have always maintained a healthy weight until a couple of years ago with the onset of the menopause and hypothyroidism.? Yes it's true that when we get older our metabolism slows down but we can help keep it moving by regular exercise.

Drinking green tea will speed up your metabolism as it contains many antioxidants.? Spices in your food will also help and having a regular sauna apparently improves it by 20%.? However, check with your Doctor to make sure any medical complaints you have will not make this more detrimental to your health.

What excuses do you use to either eat or not exercise and how do you deal with them?
